Formally known as Panthera Tigris in Latin, the Tiger originates from various parts of Asia, including countries like India, Russia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam.



How Long Have Tigers Been Around?

Tigers have been roaming the earth for millions of years. The modern Panthera Tigris, which we know today as the Tiger can be traced back to an estimated 2 million years ago.



How Many Tigers Are Left in the World?

According to the WWF, as of 2022, there are only an estimated 3,900 tigers left in the world.



Physical Features:

Tigers are one of the largest members of the cat species family. With males typically being larger and heavier than females, Adult male tigers weigh between 200 - 670 pounds (90 - 300 kilograms). The adult female tigers weigh between 140 - 370 pounds (65 - 170 kilograms).

Tigers are typically around 3 - 3.5 feet (90 - 110 centimeters) tall at the shoulder.

Length →

In terms of length, Tigers can measure between 8 - 10 feet (90 - 110 centimeters) from the tip of the nose to the base of their tail. The tail itself can be 2.5 - 3.5 feet (75 - 105 centimeters) long.



How Many Different Types of Tigers Exist?

There are currently six recognized subspecies of tigers:

  1. Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris tigris)
  2. Indochinese Tiger (Panthera tigris corbetti)
  3. Malayan Tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni)
  4. Siberian Tiger (Panthera tigris altaica)
  5. South China Tiger (Panthera tigris amoyensis) 
  6. Sumatran Tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae)


What do Tigers Eat? 

Since Tigers are carnivores and primarily eat meat. Their diet consists mainly of large hoofed mammals such as deer, wild boar, and antelope. However, tigers are opportunistic hunters and will also prey on smaller animals like monkeys, birds, fish, and reptiles when larger prey is scarce. In some cases, tigers may even hunt domestic livestock if they are readily available.

Tigers are apex predators, meaning they are at the top of the food chain in their ecosystems. They are solitary hunters and use stealth and camouflage to stalk and ambush their prey. Tigers are incredibly powerful and capable of taking down prey much larger than themselves, sometimes exceeding their body weight in a single meal.



Tigers face numerous threats, primarily due to human activities. Some of the key threats to tiger populations include:

Habitat Loss and Fragmentation

Deforestation, conversion of natural habitats for agriculture, urbanization, and infrastructure development result in the loss and fragmentation of tiger habitats. This reduces the available prey base and increases human-wildlife conflicts.

Tigers are poached for their skins, bones, and other body parts, which are highly valued in traditional Asian medicine and fetch high prices on the black market. Poaching is driven by the demand for tiger parts and products in some parts of Asia.

As human populations expand and encroach upon tiger habitats, conflicts between tigers and people increase. Tigers may prey on livestock, leading to retaliatory killings by farmers. Human-tiger conflicts pose a threat to both tigers and human communities.

Prey Depletion

Climate Change

Climate change affects tiger habitats by altering precipitation patterns, increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, and impacting prey availability. These changes can disrupt ecosystems and threaten tiger populations.

Roads, dams, and other infrastructure projects fragment tiger habitats, making it difficult for tigers to move freely and reducing genetic diversity within populations.



How Does Water Conservation Help Tigers?
